Tik Tik Tik Movie Picture
The name 'Tik Tik Tik' has a great history in Tamil cinema. It was the 1981 film, directed by P Bharathiraja, that proved that he was not just here to make village-based films. The old film Tik Tik Tik starred Kamal Haasan, Madhavi, Radha and Swapna in the lead roles.
After three decades, director Shakti Soundar Rajan borrowed the title for his ambitious film. Rajan's Tik Tik Tik is hailed as India's first space film and its title is just apt for the genre. He had roped in Jayam Ravi, Nivetha Pethuraj, Ramesh Thilak and Aaroz Aziz in the lead roles.
The film released on June 22 and the box office collection on the second and third days seem to have picked up due to positive word of mouth. Despite registering good collection, the film has been criticised for its logic-defying sequences and the lack of good writing.
Is it okay for a director to dilute his script to make it appeal to the audience of all centres? Or should he just be brave enough to stick to one genre? These are the much-needed questions that need to be answered by a director and producer.
The main flaw of Tik Tik Tik is Shakti Soundar Rajan's weak writing. When you are at the helm of an ambitious film, there is nothing wrong with spending money in roping good writers who would help enhance your visuals.
Tik Tik Tik's storyline is so weak that even an 8th-grade kid would find it ridiculous. As we all know, it takes years and years of hard work and practice for an astronaut to be able to qualify to fly to space. Here it all happens during a song. If it takes decades of hard work for an astronaut to make it to space, imagine what would happen in the case of an escape artist/magician like Jayam Ravi!
No, you are not supposed to pop that question as anything and everything is possible in the Indianised version of a space film. Why didn't Ravi or Shakti give a second thought about an escape artist going into space? No one knows.
Viewers are now intelligent enough to know what kind of films work and what don't. They expect something different in each film. However, Shakti Soundar Rajan decides to make people believe a lone man could pull a 20-tonne missile all by himself. Such horrendous mistakes by the filmmaker ruin the whole experience of seeing a film like Tik Tik Tik.
Another disadvantage that filmmakers these days face is that they tend to dilute the script by blending one too many genres in the same movie. In Hollywood, we hardly see filmmakers opting to combine two genres. If it's a space film, it'll stick to that throughout the course of the film.
This is another aspect where Tik Tik Tik failed. It wasn't just a space film. But it had to be a mix of comedy, action and emotional elements, just to make it a wholesome commercial entertainer. Why is it always difficult for Tamil directors to stick to one genre?
Is it the producer's demand or is it the fear of not fitting in the 'commercial' bandwagon? It is high time the directors paid heed to what the audience wants and are sensible with their creation.
